Welcome to the SystemVerilog Series 👋

Before we write a single line of code — let’s talk about what this series is, who it’s for, what you’re going to learn, and how we’re going to approach it together.

💡 Why We’re Doing This

SystemVerilog is one of those languages that people use every day but rarely understand fully. Most engineers pick up the parts they need for their current project — a handful of data types, some always blocks, maybe a basic assertion or two — and call it a day. That works, until it doesn’t.

At some point you’ll hit a bug that comes down to not knowing how the simulator schedules events. Or you’ll spend a week debugging a testbench race condition that a clocking block would have prevented. Or you’ll write an assertion that’s always vacuously true and never actually checks anything.

This series exists to close those gaps. Not as a language reference that you skim and forget — but as a structured, example-heavy walkthrough that builds real understanding, post by post.

The goal isn’t to memorise SV syntax. It’s to understand the language well enough that you can reason about why it behaves the way it does — and use that understanding to write better RTL and better testbenches.

👥 Who Is This Series For?

Honestly — a pretty wide range of people. Here’s a rough idea of who will get the most out of this:

You don’t need to be an expert going in. But you should be comfortable reading hardware description code and have some idea of what simulation means. We’re not starting from “what is a wire.”

📚 What the Series Covers

We’ve structured the series in four broad phases that build on each other naturally. Here’s the big picture:

Phase 1 — The Language Foundation

Types, literals, arrays, operators, expressions, scoping, variables, and nets. All the raw material you need before anything else makes sense.

Phase 2 — Hardware Modelling

Procedural blocks, always variants, tasks, functions, processes, fork-join, and how simulation time actually works under the hood.

Phase 3 — Verification

Classes, randomisation, constraints, assertions, coverage, interprocess communication, program blocks, and clocking — the full verification toolkit.

Phase 4 — Integration

Interfaces, packages, parameters, hierarchy, configuration libraries, system tasks, the DPI, and how everything connects at the project level.

Here’s a quick preview of some of the specific things we’ll be covering across the series — just so you know what’s in store:

📄 How We Write These Posts

A quick note on style — because we think it matters.

Every post focuses on one topic and covers it completely. We don’t give you a watered-down overview and tell you to read the spec for details. If a concept has edge cases or gotchas that matter in practice, we cover them. If two things look similar but behave differently, we show you both side by side.

Every post has:

  • Real code examples — not toy snippets that only work in one contrived scenario.
  • Comparison tables and callouts — for the things that are most commonly confused.
  • Practical patterns — the idioms you’ll actually use in a real project, not just syntax demonstrations.

We also don’t reference the language spec by section number or tell you to “see the LRM for details.” If it’s relevant, we explain it right there in the post.

Each post is standalone. You can jump to any topic in the series if you already know the earlier material. But if you’re building up from scratch, the order is intentional — each post assumes what came before it.

🤔 One Honest Expectation

Some of this material is genuinely hard. The scheduling semantics post, the multi-clock assertions, the DPI disable protocol — these aren’t topics you’ll fully absorb in one read. And that’s okay.

The point isn’t to become an expert on every topic the first time you read it. It’s to have a clear, well-structured explanation to come back to when a real problem in your work brings you back to that topic. That’s when it clicks — when you’re looking at an actual bug or an actual design question and you suddenly remember “wait, there was a post about exactly this.”

So bookmark the series, not just individual posts. You’ll end up using more of it than you expect.
